Inkscape is an open-source vector graphics software that provides users with a free platform for Windows, MacOS, and Linux users. It provides a simple interface where users can create brand logos, banners, and much more. On top of that, since Inkscape is an open-source platform, users can take advantage of customizing the code and share it with other users. This allows you to enhance the system, so that it can provide more tools and features.

  • It does not offer a monthly or annual paid plan
  • It is an open-source system

  • It does not have the most user-friendly platform
  • Customer support team is quite lacking

When it comes to customization, Inkscape provides limitless customization, thanks to its open-source quality. Plus, it is free, making it quite cost-effective. That said, there are a few limitations linked with free platforms. So, if you do not mind spending a few dollars every month, then we would highly suggest that you visit the lower portion of this page. We provide you a list of the best alternatives to Inkscape that you can use instead.

“ Great for SVG ”

9/10 (overall) - Rodrigo T.
  • The fact that Inkscape is free software and is great for editing SVG format makes it an indispensable tool.
  • I started using Inkscape seriously, to create things like logos and baners, after a short learning curve, the tool became very useful, and its use was almost daily for a while.
  • The most important thing for commercial use, which makes it impractical to use.
  • Inkscape alone is the limited support for .AI and .EPS files, as these are popular formats for distributing content in asset stores.

“ Vector image creation/edit for free ”

8/10 (overall) - Alexander B.
  • Firstly I love Inkscape due to it being Free and Open Source.
  • It has a great community with loads of documentation online on how to use it.
  • The UI/UX feels a bit outdate.
  • Being an opensource piece of software this is being improved constantly and the software has great potential.

“ To Create High-Quality Vector Images for Free, Look No Further Than Inkscape ”

8/10 (overall) - Sebastien L.
  • One of the features I like the most about Inkscape, apart from the fact that it is an open source (free) software, is its ability to convert bitmap images to vectors.
  • The tool is also very intuitive to use.
  • Inkscape is filled with so many options that the default interface can look like a mess on small resolution screens, hopefully, it is possible to remove less used buttons by customizing the interface.
  • Sometimes, when working with images that render a very high amount of details by applying filters, the software becomes slow and may unexpectedly crash.

Q & A

Q. What are the platforms does Inkscape support?

So that you can run Inkscape on your device, you need to know first what are the supported operating system for the app. Inkscape supports most of the Linux platform, as well as snap packages and PPA for Ubuntu. For Windows device, Inkscape supports 32bit and 64bit, self-contained installer, binary without installation, and portable app. On the other hand, for Mac OS X, the app supports DMG, including MacPorts. Furthermore, take note that Inkscape doesn’t anymore support Windows 98/Me and 2000.

Q. Is Inkscape perfect for me to use?

Although it doesn’t have the complete vector features, unlike leading software, Inkscape’s latest versions offer you the basic vector graphics editing capabilities. Whether you opt to use the app for your creative art, web graphics, diagrams, or logos, Inkscape could be your best go-to vector-based graphic design software.

Q. Does Inkscape provide animation features?

As mentioned, Inkscape still has lacking features for vector features. Currently, the application doesn’t support animation, but there are ways on how you can deal with your animation projects. You can still create your SVG images or raster images through the Inkscape app, then process your animation using other software.

Q. What file formats does Inkscape accept for import and export?

Inkscape supports multiple file formats for graphic design that are widely used today. With the latest version of Inkscape, it supports file formats like SVG, PDF, EPS, SVGZ, Adobe Illustrator formats, CDR, and VSD. For raster formats, Inkscape supports JPEG, PNG, and GIF. On top of that, Inkscape can save Postscript/EPS/EPSi, LaTeX (*.tex), POVRay (*.pov), HPGL, as well as FXG, SIF, and HTML5 Canvas.
